Hello Friend,

Today I’ll be sharing tips to make your next closet purge a success and hopefully a little less overwhelming.

My big closet purge of 2023 was a huge turning point for me for so many reasons (see my last post), but purging is not a one-and-done event. Sometimes life changes, so your needs change, or maybe you change and you just don’t want to wear certain pieces anymore. (Or maybe it's a bit of both). Whatever the case, purges sometimes have to happen.

The Easiest Way

The easiest way to purge for most people is probably going to be purging by season. Doing it this way is slow and requires patience, but it's probably a lot less disruptive to your life than living with piles and piles of clothes scattered throughout the house. (See my purge story here and here)

Step 1 - Create a Style Plan

Create a Seasonal Style master plan for yourself. A Style master plan is just a list of the types of pieces you love AND currently wear in a typical week during that season.

A good rule of thumb is that 80 - 90% of your wardrobe be made up of the pieces you wear for your daily life. And the other 10 - 20% of your wardrobe can be everything else like trial pieces and special occasion pieces.

My 10 - 20% are my trial pieces. I don't really have any dedicated special occasion pieces at the moment. When I have had to dress up, I have been able to wear the black skirt shown below with a removable underskirt.

"80 -90 % of the clothes in your closet should be the pieces that you currently wear."

Step 2 - Remove Pieces That Don't Fit the Style Plan

If possible, have only the pieces that you will be wearing during the season hanging in your closet.

You don't have to purge the other seasons, just remove them from your closet for the season, so that you can experience the joy of having a clutter-free closet full of only the pieces that you wear and love. It's going to be very motivating.

What about your sentimental pieces? Can these be repurposed or re - homed to someone else who can truly appreciate and use them? Think about that. I have a couple of pieces that hold sentimental value to me. I display them on dressmaker dummies in my sewing area (see example below) so that I can enjoy seeing them every day.

And there you have it – an easy guide to making your closet purge both effective and enjoyable. The hardest part will probably be letting go of certain pieces, but you will be happy that you did in the long run.

But wait, there's more to help you on this journey! As a special bonus for my Stitch Style Vault members, I've created an exclusive Closet Purge Checklist. This detailed guide walks you through each step of the process, ensuring you don't miss a thing.

In Summary .....

Remember, friends, a closet purge isn't just about decluttering – it's a journey to rediscovering your style and making your wardrobe truly reflect who you are. When I completed my last seasonal purge, I felt a sense of clarity and joy. It's liberating to surround yourself with clothes that speak to your current lifestyle and preferences.
